EPA calculates the AQI for five major air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act: ground-level ozone , particle pollution (also known as particulate matter ), carbon monoxide , sulfur dioxide , and nitrogen dioxide. The problem of air pollution has become a new challenge for the world. A bad air quality index indicates that air is not fit for breathing and can cause many unwanted problems. Therefore, the problem of air pollution has to be tackled at the root level. Devices like the electrostatic precipitator and scrubber help in removing particulate matter and some harmful gases respectively.


Currently, only particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide are being measured. For example: in village air, methane high due to open compost pits and animal husbandry. YET under this index, village air-quality will be “good”, because methane not monitored. Doesn’t monitor Benzene.
