The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality. It tells you how clean or polluted your air is, and what associated health effects might be a concern for you. The air quality index is a piecewise linear function of the pollutant concentration. At the boundary between AQI categories, there is a discontinuous jump of one AQI unit. An air quality index ( AQI ) is a number used by government agencies to communicate to the public how polluted the air currently is or how polluted it is forecast to become.


As the AQI increases , an increasingly large percentage of the population is likely to experience increasingly severe adverse health effects. AQI is 12 the PMAQI is 5 SOis 3 NOx is 5 and all other pollutants are less than 12 then the AQI is 125–determined ONLY by the concentration of PM2. When ozone is the only pollutant affecting air quality, the risks to people’s health can be described from both short-term exposure to ozone (based on 1-hr averaged concentrations) and longer-term exposure to ozone (based on 8-hr average concentrations). These gases, collectively called greenhouse gases, include carbon dioxide , organic chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons ( CFCs ), methane , nitrous oxide , ozone, and many others. Carbon dioxide , although not the most potent of the greenhouse gases, is the most important because of the huge volumes emitted into the air by combustion of fossil fuels (e.g., gasoline, oil, coal). Ozone in the stratosphere is good because it shields the earth from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Ozone at ground level, where we breathe, is bad because it can harm human health. Ozone forms when two types of pollutants (VOCs and NOx) react in sunlight.
